Harvest Days

To everything there is a season … last week we harvested / processed the season’s first flock of pastured poultry. We had wonderful friends to help with the process and everything went well – except the thermocoupler on the scalder – went out twice. Thank goodness for large pots and improvisation! We made it through and had some lovely, fresh chicken to show for it.

The benefits of what we do can be clouded when we are cleaning pooh from brooders, keeping waterers clean, moving chicken tractors and raking behind them or dealing with the death of a chicken. All  a ‘part of life’ as I tell the children but when we look past those we see the real reason behind the work.

fresh, clean, healthy food for our table and the tables of others

exercise for the body and sunshine for the soul

learning about true friends

meeting new friends

soup for supper, made by a friend

We count it a blessing to count our blessings.
